چکیده

The partial derivative automaton (Apd) is usually smaller than other nondeterministic finite automata constructed from a regular expression, and it can be seen as a quotient of the Glushkov automaton (Apos). By estimating the number of regular expressions that have ε as a partial derivative, we compute a lower bound of the average number of mergings of states in Apos and describe its asymptotic behaviour. This depends on the alphabet size, k, and for growing k’s its limit approaches half the number of states in Apos. The lower bound corresponds to consider the Apd automaton for the marked version of the regular expression, i.e. where all its letters are made different. Experimental results suggest that the average number of states of this automaton, and of the Apd automaton for the unmarked regular expression, are very close to each other.

On the State Complexity of Partial Derivative Automata For Regular Expressions with Intersection

Extended regular expressions (with complement and intersection) are used in many applications due to their succinctness. In particular, regular expressions extended with intersection only (also called semi-extended) can already be exponentially smaller than standard regular expressions or equivalent nondeterministic finite automata (NFA). For practical purposes it is important to study the aver...

Prefix and Right-Partial Derivative Automata

Recently, Yamamoto presented a new method for the conversion from regular expressions (REs) to non-deterministic finite automata (NFA) based on the Thompson ε-NFA (AT). The AT automaton has two quotients discussed: the suffix automaton Asuf and the prefix automaton, Apre. Eliminating ε-transitions in AT, the Glushkov automaton (Apos) is obtained. Thus, it is easy to see that Asuf and the partia...

Reduction of Computational Complexity in Finite State Automata Explosion of Networked System Diagnosis (RESEARCH NOTE)

This research puts forward rough finite state automata which have been represented by two variants of BDD called ROBDD and ZBDD. The proposed structures have been used in networked system diagnosis and can overcome cominatorial explosion. In implementation the CUDD - Colorado University Decision Diagrams package is used. A mathematical proof for claimed complexity are provided which shows ZBDD ...

On Average Behaviour of Regular Expressions in Strong Star Normal Form

For regular expressions in (strong) star normal form a large set of efficient algorithms is known, from conversions into finite automata to characterisations of unambiguity. In this paper we study the average complexity of this class of expressions using analytic combinatorics. As it is not always feasible to obtain explicit expressions for the generating functions involved, here we show how to...
